SAFETY INFO &

QUICK-START GUIDE

Modifications have been made to this guide to reflect the custom product changes requested by Bell Canada. These changes were applied to all devices labeled CE60S107. These changes include:

  • Voltage settings set to a uniquely sensitive Smart Adaptive mode.
  • Current settings set to the lowest sensitivity setting.
  • Mute timeout set to 2 minutes.
  • Blue clips.

SAFETY WARNING:

  • COMPASS should be used only by trained and qualified personnel.
  • Always adhere to proper high voltage electrical safety practices.
  • Never place COMPASS in direct contact with a live conductor.
  • COMPASS does not detect voltage from underground cables or DC sources.
  • Always make sure COMPASS is set to the correct sensitivity for your environment.

COMPASS should only be used as a secondary voltage/current detection device in the field.

MOUNTING DEVICE

For best results, COMPASS should always be worn in the following position:

Under the brim of a standard hard hat

Centered within your field of vision

Clips on top, button and LEDs facing down

IMPORTANT: Review User Guide BEFORE using COMPASS in any other positions (handheld, wrist strap, lanyard, hot stick)

basic operation

Power On

Press button. LEDs will show ORANGE start-up animation. The center LED of your COMPASS will blink GREEN every 5 seconds when it is functioning properly.

MUTE ALERTS

Press and release button while powered on. GREEN corner LEDs mean audible alerts are ON, RED LEDs mean that alerts will be MUTED for 2 minutes.

POWER OFF

Hold button down until LEDs in both corners turn ORANGE, then release. Shut down animation will occur.

Smart Adaptive mode

Smart Adaptive Mode is designed for users working in an environment where electric and magnetic fields are known to be present. COMPASS can quickly adapt to the ambient fields and pause alerts if the user is not moving closer to a detected source. If the user then moves closer to the detected source, alerts will begin again.

Sweeping RED LEDs indicate Smart Adaptive Mode.  This mode will adjust to the environment and automatically pause alerts if you are not moving towards an energized source.

IMPORTANT:

Smart Adaptive alerts are based on changes in ambient electric or magnetic fields, not proximity to the source. Alerts may not occur within the OSHA Minimum Approach Distance (MAD) in this mode.

DETECTION ALERTS

When COMPASS detects voltage or current, it issues audio (beeping) and visual (flashing LEDs) alerts. As the user approaches an electrified source, LED flashing and audio alerts will steadily increase.

If COMPASS detects that both voltage and current are present, voltage alerts will be given priority over current alerts.

RED lights = Voltage Alerts
BLUE lights = Current Detection

CURRENT DETECTION distances

COMPASS has been extensively field tested to determine its detection range for both voltage and current. Our testing process is described in depth on page 6 of the COMPASS 107-01 User Guide. The table below shows the absolute Distance first alert and the max alert.

Sensitivity (LEDs) 1A 10A 50A 100A 200A
lowest setting X / X 1ft / X 2.25ft. / 1.75ft 3.5ft. / 2.5ft. 4.5ft. / 3.5ft.

Distances were measured using a cable 2.5 feet above the ground, outdoors at 21°C and 40% RH.

Absolute distances were measured with the tester moving slowly, walkup distance was measured walking toward cable at a normal pace. Detection distances will vary in different conditions.

IMPORTANT:

Always verify exact distances for a given situation. COMPASS current sensors are slower to react than voltage sensors, users should move slowly when trying to detect current.

TROUBLESHOOTING

TROUBLE-SHOOTING

The GREEN LED at the center of your COMPASS should flash every 5 seconds during normal use. If flashing has stopped, the unit may have entered Sleep Mode. Move it several inches, the corner LEDs should light ORANGE and then the center LED should resume its normal behavior.  If the unit remains unresponsive, you should:

  1. Allow the unit to charge for at least 90min.
  2. If COMPASS is unresponsive after charging, reset by holding down the button for around 10 seconds until ORANGE start-up animation is displayed.

Note: If corner lights flash RED and YELLOW this indicates a self-test error.  Attempt to reset the device (step 2 above); if warning continues, stop using and contact Safeguard Equipment for service.

NOTE:  If the RED corner lights of your COMPASS are flashing, its battery is getting low and must be recharged.
