Compass Pro IS voltage coverage

Voltage coverage

Compass Pro IS detects 120 V – 500 kV AC on a single sensitivity scale, with no separate voltage ranges to select.

Coverage matches Compass Pro. Pro IS runs the same scale with the exception of setting 22.

Positioning

Where Compass Pro IS fits

If any part of the job sits inside a classified area — refinery units, well pads, tank farms, chemical process areas — the device on the hard hat has to be approved for it. Pro IS exists so crews keep detection through the fence line instead of carrying a second tool.

Capabilities

What Compass Pro IS does

Approved for flammable atmospheres

Carries UL, CSA, and IEC 60079 intrinsic safety approvals. The Compass Pro IS Annex governs hazardous-location use.

120 V to 500 kV, one scale

The same coverage as Compass Pro on the same 22-setting scale, with the exception of setting 22.

Direction, not just proximity

The corner LEDs sweep toward the source, then both ends of the bar flash once the worker is facing it — accurate to roughly ±20°.

Emergency events and SOS

Impact, falls above 6 ft (1.8 m), arc flash, and no-motion events raise automatically. Holding SOS for 3 seconds raises one manually.

One hardware generation

Every unit is V5+, so the whole fleet uses second-generation tuning. There is no V4 population to reconcile.

Reference

Compass Pro IS specifications

Compass Series is intended as a secondary voltage detection method only. It supplements, and never replaces, a qualified electrical safety program, permits, lockout/tagout, and PPE. Always test against a known voltage and current source before field use.

Detection ranges and sensitivity

Voltage coverage120 V AC – 500 kV AC
Sensitivity scale22 settings, with the exception of setting 22
Adaptive modesSmart Adaptive and Work Zone Adaptive
  • Voltage and current are configured separately. Each supports the scale plus the adaptive modes and Alert Disable, with the exception of setting 22.
  • A setting means the same thing on every connected device, so Pro and Pro IS readings can be compared directly.
  • Sensitivity can be changed on the device with the MAIN button or in Navigator Mobile.
  • Max Alert distance is approximately 60% of First Alert distance. A First Alert at 10 ft (3.0 m) corresponds to a Max Alert near 6 ft (1.8 m).
  • All Compass Pro IS units are V5+ and use second-generation tuning.

Detection is affected by extreme humidity, materials that shield electromagnetic fields, brisk walking speed, and three-phase systems that can cancel fields in certain areas. Warning distances also vary with the conductor’s exposed surface area, its elevation above ground, and its proximity to other grounded conductive objects.

Part numbers

Part numberDescription
M01023KIT, Compass PRO IS, 60 Hz
M01024KIT, Compass PRO IS, 50 Hz

Compass Pro IS ships as a kit in 50 Hz and 60 Hz variants. Match the SKU to your grid frequency — frequency is built into the detection tuning and is not a field-changeable setting.

Mounting

Fits how your crews already work.

Hard hat brim as standard, plus non-brimmed helmet, Petzl Vertex, IDRA 2, adhesive, and SECRA-1 adapters, and hot stick, wrist, and collapsible handheld options.

Questions

Compass Pro IS questions, answered

Is Compass Pro IS intrinsically safe certified?

Yes. Compass Pro IS carries UL 60079-0, 60079-11, and 61010-1; CSA C22.2 No. 60079-0, No. 60079-11, and No. 61010-1-12; and IEC 60079-0 and 60079-11. The Compass Pro IS Annex is the authoritative document for hazardous-location use.

How is Compass Pro IS different from Compass Pro?

Pro IS adds the hazardous-location approvals. In exchange, the battery is a smaller 85 mAh Li-ion cell rated for roughly 2 days rather than 6, the maximum operating temperature is 50 °C rather than 60 °C, and the sensitivity scale omits setting 22. Voltage coverage, alerting, and emergency events otherwise match.

How long does the Compass Pro IS battery last?

The 3.7 V / 85 mAh Li-ion cell is rated for roughly 2 days, or 16+ hours, of typical use and recharges to full in about 1.5 hours. The smaller cell is a consequence of the intrinsic safety design, so plan charging into the shift routine.

Can Compass Pro IS detect the same voltages as Compass Pro?

Yes. Pro IS covers the same 120 V AC to 500 kV AC span on the same 22-setting scale. The only detection difference is that setting 22 is not available on Pro IS.

Do all Compass Pro IS units use the newer high voltage tuning?

Yes. All Compass Pro IS units are V5+, so every unit uses second-generation tuning with extended detection distances at the top of the voltage span. Unlike Compass Pro, there is no earlier V4 population in the field.

Which Compass Pro IS part number should I order?

Order M01023 for 60 Hz systems and M01024 for 50 Hz systems. Grid frequency is built into the detection tuning, so it cannot be changed in the field.
